| The Abbey is situated on a busy main road | Road accidents | Coaches can park alongside the Abbey to unload and children are then met at the door by an Abbey Guide. Visitors to the Abbey are greeted by the duty "welcomer" or Abbey staff. |
| Public place with casual visitors at all times. | Stranger danger! | Children are always in a group and supervised
by an adult. |
| Uneven floors, metal grills, raised memorials and stones. | Possibility of falling | Verbal warning of hazard. |
|
Candles on prayer stand.
|
Danger of fire. | Verbal warning of hazard. |
|
High Altar
|
Steep steps, no ramp. | Children closely supervised by an adult. |
| North Porch | The doorway opens onto
a grassed area next to the road. |
This is the only time children are taken outside the Abbey, and only in Keystage 2. The children are asked to stand near the doorway. |
| Teachers are asked on our booking form if any child has any special needs or disabilities. As they have specific knowledge of that child, it is their responsibility to remove the child from any activity that may be damaging. | Children who are in wheelchairs can be accommodated. The Abbey is almost all on one level. The main entrance for coaches provides wheelchair accesss. We have a toilet for the disabled. | |
| It is the view of the
Vicar and PCC of the Abbey that a visit to the Abbey SHOULD BE CONSIDERED
TO BE A LOW RISK VISIT, with little risk to staff or pupils. |
The Vicar and PCC of the
Abbey have made every possible safety provision within reason, considering
the age and the nature of the building. |
It must be made clear that the overall
responsibility of care lies with the school and the teachers in charge of
the group. The school may wish to make their own risk assessment. |
| Evacuation procedures are
available in case of a fire. |
A first aid box is kept in the Vicar's
vestry and Abbey shop.. |
A phone is available in the shop |
