Volunteer

Volunteers play an indispensable part in society. At Shrewsbury Abbey we are particularly aware of the blessings that volunteers give, whether meeting and greeting daily visitors, keeping the Abbey maintained and looking good, or doing things behind the scenes towards the ongoing ministry of this ancient church and parish.

Daily Guides

Without our volunteer guides, we simply couldn’t be open. Instead, you would find a closed door, which would be unthinkable to our mind. We are blessed, though, with a team of volunteers who meet, greet and, if they wish, guide members of the public who visit the Abbey during the day. We receive 25,000 visitors annually, who come from all over the world!

Some of our guides are experts in the history of the Abbey and the town. Others may not be expert but do share a love of our ancient church and are pleased to pass on their knowledge.

Our volunteer guides are some of the loveliest people you could ever meet. Their sole wish is that you enjoy your visit to the Abbey. If it helps to bring your dog, they are very welcome too! In fact we are all dog-lovers and receive a great many four-legged visitors annually.

Event Stewards

Some of our daytime volunteers also help at evening events. For some years now, we have had an extensive events programme, attracting an additional 25,000 visitors through our doors. Photography

The Abbey is known for its architectural beauty as well as spiritual and historic significance.  Amateur photographers are always welcome. There is no formal charge or permit but we do appreciate donations in the box or via our electronic terminals. We also welcome copies of your better photos if you are willing to share them.
