As part of our Saturdays at Noon 2023 series, Shrewsbury Abbey Organist, Nigel Pursey, will give a recital on the restored 1911 William Hill organ. Nigel masterminded the restoration, which was carried out by GO Organ Builders of Herefordshire. A retiring collection will be taken in aid of the Abbey Organ Fund. Parking right opposite the Abbey in Abbey Foregate car park.
Come along and enjoy the sound of strings in our wonderful Abbey and at the same time support a very worthwhile charity. Members of Sounds Interesting will be playing to raise money for Team Cleo, the children's brain tumour charity. One of our musicians tragically lost her daughter to brain cancer and has set up this charity to raise awareness of the early signs of brain tumour in children. Early awareness leads to early diagnosis which can lead to treatment with a greater chance of success. Team Cleo aims to help provide tools to facilitate that all-important early awareness. The music, by American-born local composer, John Charles Hyslop, will include two premiere performances: Neolithic Suite for 3 Violas, consists of songs and dances which might have been heard at our ancestor´s festive gatherings--perhaps at Mitchell´s Fold or other local monumental sites—circa five thousand years ago; String Quartet no 3, consists of another set of songs and dances, with a folk flavour, but which would have been popular much more recently. Entry is free of charge, though generous donations in support of Team Cleo are welcome.

On Monday 8th May between 1pm and 4pm, we will be holding a huge tea party and picnic in and around the Abbey. We are looking for wonderful volunteers who are happy to lend us their talents to make this a truly wonderful community event. If you are a face painter, children’s entertainer, musician or have another talent; if you can provide food and drink or anything else you think we might need, please get in touch. We would love to hear from neighbours in Abbey Foregate/Monkmoor, both businesses and charities. We want to make this event open to everyone! Let’s celebrate His Majesty’s Coronation by joining together for a wonderful community party! All enquiries: manager@shrewsburyabbey.com | 01743 232723 | 07968 779008
