Members of Shropshire WI create a poppy display each year that is as moving as it is magnificent. This year promises to be no exception. Entry is free, donations welcome.

We are delighted to bring you Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf. The narrator is Allan Toop and at the organ is Nigel Pursey. This is a multi-media presentation primarily designed for schools but everyone is most welcome - and it's free of charge! The piece itself lasts about 30 minutes but we will include some information about the piece and the Abbey's fine William Hill organ of 1911, recently restored and enhanced. You will of course be able to hear it in all its magnificence. Times: 10.30am & 1.30pm

Alongside the massed choirs and multi-media presentation, the Abbey will be hosting the annual Poppy Display by members of Shropshire WI. This will surely be a very poignant and moving evening.

North Wales Opera returns to its Shrewsbury ‘home’ to present Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. The Abbey will be transformed with a raised platform and expert lighting to create intense drama accompanied by talented singers and Shrewsbury’s very own Ensemble SY1 live orchestra. Anne Williams-King (Director of North Wales Opera) travelled the globe singing the title role in this opera to great acclaim and has directed a beautifully traditional portrayal of this opera. It takes a heart of stone not to be moved by the great tragedy of this story, which is so enriched by the composition. Everyone will have heard the humming chorus and the “Un bel di” (One fine day). Like many of its class, this opera can be expressed in a few sentences and knowing the plot will allow you to sit back and allow the drama to unfold.
