Bowie By Candlelight comes to Shrewsbury Abbey! We are delighted to bring you Bowie by Candlelight, featuring 'David Live' The David Bowie Tribute Show. An incredible night of Bowie anthems including Let's Dance, Starman, Life on Mars, Rebel Rebel and more, performed live, by candlelight. David Live is one of the best tributes to any artist you will ever see - a respectful and charming homage, attracting praise from all corners of the Bowie community. Chris Evans (BBC Radio 2) remarked, “THEY WERE FANTASTIC!” and Lord March, who had the band play at his renowned Goodwood Revival Party when the real David Bowie had to decline, exclaimed, “IT’S DAVID BOWIE!” The band has performed for the BBC, for the Cambridge May Ball and for Lord and Lady Gerald Fitzalan-Howard at the wedding of their daughter, Florence. We recently had the honour of playing at The David Bowie World Fan Convention in Liverpool. David Live was formed nearly 20 years ago and is considered the favourite amongst true Bowie fans. From Bach to the Blues! Saxophonist Gerard McChrystal and Shrewsbury Abbey organist Nigel Pursey present a varied evening of music on Oct 31st. Music crosses eras and styles, including Bach, Vivaldi, Haydn, Debussy and Ravel transitions, to folk, popular and jazz-influenced music in the second half. One of the highlights will be a stunning version of the tune Deep Purple. The concert ends with the rousing show piece Pequena Czarda. Gerard is known for his relaxed and informative introductions. He will provide background to each piece and play three different saxophones, including the tiny sopranino. During recent sessions with Nigel, we have been enthralled by Gerard’s sublime sound in the wonderful acoustic of the Abbey. We have been quite blown away!. As you might imagine, Gerard’s engagement diary is pretty much solid, however we have managed to find a date – 31st October – when the people of Shrewsbury and Shropshire can experience his extraordinary sound. Members of Shropshire WI create a poppy display each year that is as moving as it is magnificent. This year promises to be no exception. Entry is free, donations welcome.

This is a multi-media presentation primarily designed for schools but everyone is most welcome - and it's free of charge! The piece itself lasts about 30 minutes but we will include some information about the piece and the Abbey's fine William Hill organ of 1911, recently restored and enhanced. You will of course be able to hear it in all its magnificence. Times: 10.30am & 1.30pm

Alongside the massed choirs and multi-media presentation, the Abbey will be hosting the annual Poppy Display by members of Shropshire WI. This will surely be a very poignant and moving evening.
